Some days test your patience. Everything goes wrong. You get out of the bed on the wrong foot; you are already late; the toast gets burnt, cranky toddler gets up sooner, it’s raining, you need to get some grocery and husband is travelling . And above all you and your toddler have had too much of each other’s company
This kind of a day will make you feel like howling like your toddler. Okay go ahead and howl!
Once when my daughter was a toddler I did just that howled at the top of my voice. Thankfully at that time we were staying in an isolated place and so there was no one near to hear. What happened next?
Well my dearest toddler was aghast for few minutes, confused as she felt something was terribly wrong. She was silent for a while and then came towards me placed her hand on my hair and looked at me with lips pursed in a slightly downward curve a sure sign that she was on the verge of crying. I stopped howling and glanced. Her lips straightened. Again I howled and her lips automatically went down and then we did it again. Now the curve turned slightly upward and there was a touch of a smile. Soon she thought it was a game and without knowing we started rolling with laughter.
Then I sat on the floor to clean the mess. She ran and got me a bucket. With an enthusiastic helper at my side I cleared the kitchen floor, gave her a bath and got her ready. We drove to get the grocery where she enjoyed looking around. Afterwards we had an ice-cream. The day went by at its pace.
At night, I sat with my diary to write and realized that every day is a different experience. For days when things get difficult it’s good to shift focus, let go and search for victories or treasures that are often BIG wins.
Here is my list of victories or treasures
- Rain soaked morning was beautiful
- The cotton silk tree near my house was blooming with flowers
- Enjoyed my cup of coffee in the cool breeze
- Got a book I wanted to read for ages
- Received an email from my client sharing how my work had helped her
- Observing the tiny spring green tendrils on the fennel plant in my balcony
- I discovered a new easy recipe to cook a vegetable
- Clicking a perfect picture of a Sunbird
- Speaking with a friend on phone undisturbed
- It was bliss to write my diary with the toddler sleeping peacefully
Every phase is transient. Your toddler will soon grow up and start school. Time flies literally; we need to enjoy the messiness of a mother’s life.
So from this Mother’s Day make a note the good, happy things in your life, and soon you will have a treasure diary. Later when you read you will be able to experience that day again!
